What is a resource in Cognise?
A resource is a digital file uploaded, or link added. Examples of content that can be a resource are:
Video
Video embeds e.g., YouTube
Images
PDF
Audio files
HTML e.g. upload a zipped HTML package
Embeds eg Sharepoint embed copied
URL link
Other file types
Creating a resource
Admins use the Let's Create Workflow and select Resource.
Note: All members in Cognise can create resources - a standard member-user (non admin) must be in a group which allows for members to create learning.
Embeds
Common video embeds like Youtube and vimeo are known to Cognise. Other embeds may not be video at all. For example, an embed copied from SharePoint.
If a file is embedded, and the embed code is correctly formatted, and copied correctly then it is likely the link can be displayed as an embed in Cognise.
Not all URL links can be embedded - a link that is not embeddable will open and show on a separate browser tab.
Displaying a Link as an embed
In Cognise, after creating a resource by pasting in a URL, if the creator thinks it is embeddable they can do the following.
Under Edit Link Details to select 'Display as embed'. Then, Save and view. If it displays in Cognise, then that is the same for the standard user member. If the resource does not display in Cognise, the creator goes back and unchecks 'Display as embed'.
For all Links (not embeds), the member user when accessing via the library will see a button 'Visit Site'. Clicking that button will open the Link in a new tab on the user's browser.
When adding a resource link the default is not to display as an embed. Unless Cognise knows eg Youtube video embed link and can auto determine, it's best to go check.
Catalogs
For a resource to be seen it needs to sit in a Catalog and be Published. A resource can live in multiple catalogs.
Admins accessing and viewing resources
Admins can via the library apply filters to narrow to resources as well as the kind of resource.
User experience accessing resources
A standard member user will often only have to single click on a card or row to display the resource. This is the case for PDF, audio, video, video embeds, HTML. Links require two clicks and are viewed in another browser tab.
In the library the member can use the search and also apply the 'Kind' filter to narrow resources down to the a particular kind of resource e.g., PDF.
